Technical Services Director
In 1983, Douglas was awarded a Ph.D. degree in Microbiology and Immunology by the University of Washington, receiving a National Research Service Award for his work in Biologic Infection Training. He is also the recipient of a Master of Science degree (1979) from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Science degree (1977) from the University of Massachusetts. During his graduate and post-graduate instruction, he developed DNA Sequence Analysis Software and an Instrument Interface.
His credentials also include Bioterrorism Training (2008), SQF Expert (2008), GMA-SAFE Auditor (2007), Better Process Control (FDA registered), Canning and Low-Acid Foods, and HACCP Training (IFPA, the University of Georgia). He possesses a N2 Wastewater License.
Doug is a member of the Institute for Food Technology, the American Society for Microbiology, the American Society for Quality, the American Waterworks Association, and the American Water Environment Association. Among numerous professional publications he has authored or co-authored, are, in 1979, “DNA Homologies Between Agrobacterium radiobacter Plasmids and 2 Tri-Plasmid,” appearing in the Proceedings of the International Conference on Plant Pathology, Bacteria, 4: 259; “Adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus to Human Nasal Epithelial Cells,” Abstract of the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Microbiology, 1982:22; and, in 1986, “Immobilization of Animal Cell Culture by the Bellco Bioreactor,” published in Pharm Tech Japan, 2(10).
Doug’s professional career began in 1984, at Bellco Glass of Vineland, New Jersey, where he served as Manager of Engineering and Director of Technical Services until 1986 when he was appointed Vice-President, Technical Services. He was a member of the glassmaker’s board of directors from 1986-1992. He remained as Vice-President until establishing his own Computer Consultancy in 1993, where he developed a Formula Database for a food company.
From 1994-1996, he was a Technical Sales Engineer for Sagian, Inc., of Indianapolis, specializing in robotic systems. From 1997-2000, he was Database and Computer Operations Manager for the Philadelphia office of the National Disease Research Interchange.
In 2000, Doug joined F&S Produce, in Rosenhayn, serving until 2005 as the fresh-cut fruit and vegetable producer’s Technical Services Director and, from 2005 until 2007, as its Plant Manager. In his former capacity, he developed policies and procedures for emergency operations, security, and food safety, in addition to overseeing regulatory compliance with FDA, DEP, NJHSS, and the U.S. military. As Plant Manager, Doug was responsible for the company’s Plant 1 operations employing over 200 people at peak season.
In April 2007, Doug resumed his position in the Technical Services Department, which he now heads.
